Pollenca and the Surroundings

monastry from pollenca

Pollenca is a lovely middle sized town in the North West of the island. It has historic lanes and markets , quiet bars and restaurants and is a centre for culture, music and festivals.

pollenca steps

There are mountain walks to the north and the port itself is about a 10 minute cycle ride to the north. Depending on where you go from there, you can head West into the spectacular rocky coastline, or East to the wide open beaches and off towards Alcudia, which is Pollencas more lively younger brother ( although the town itself is a medieval fortress ).

Looking from the main courtyard accross the town on the other side is another small church set at the top of a hill. To reach this you must scale the steps of which there are 365 - one for every day of the year. Except I think there are a few more now then that. Depending on when you come, there may well be either a classical music festival in the town, or the famouse moors verses christians 3 day pagant where everyone in the town dresses up , joins one side or the other and battles with the aid of much outdoor food and alchohol.

There are 2 main squares in the town which become full on market days. A long windy road takes you up South towards the famouse monastry of Lluc ( luke in English ) .

Beaches

There are beaches here to suit just about everybody depending on how far you want to travel. Here is a photo of one of the beaches we use for training which is to the East of Alcudia.

muro beach training

This incredible beach is called the Playa de Muro , and even in the Summer there is plenty of space, and a shallow surf going out quite far. It is not so good for snorkelling though, - the rocky calas are better for that.

This is another quiet training area for when we want to finish in a more civilised bar - it is called Alcanada. This is a short trip from pollenca up a non touristy headland. There are a series of flat concrete bathing platforms jutting out into the sea. Ideal for a bit of training and then a jump into the lovely clear water.
